Distributed Approximation Algorithms for the Multiple Knapsack Problem

چکیده
We consider the distributed version of the Multiple Knapsack Problem (MKP), wherem items are to be distributed amongst n processors, each with a knapsack. We propose different distributed approximation algorithms with a tradeoff between time and message complexities. The algorithms are based on the greedy approach of assigning the best item to the knapsack with the largest capacity. These algorithms obtain a solution with a bound of 1 n+1 times the optimum solution, with either O (m logn) time and O (mn) messages, or O (m) time and O (

APPROXIMATE ALGORITHM FOR THE MULTI-DIMENSIONAL KNAPSACK PROBLEM BY USING MULTIPLE CRITERIA DECISION MAKING
In this paper, an interesting and easy method to solve the multi-dimensional knapsack problem is presented. Although it belongs to the combinatorial optimization, but the proposed method belongs to the decision making field in mathematics. In order to, initially efficiency values for every item is calculated then items are ranked by using Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDA). Finally, ite...
متن کاملA successive approximation algorithm for the multiple knapsack problem
It is well-known that the multiple knapsack problem is NP-hard, and does not admit an FPTAS even for the case of two identical knapsacks. Whereas the 0-1 knapsack problem with only one knapsack has been intensively studied, and some effective exact or approximation algorithms exist. A natural approach for the multiple knapsack problem is to pack the knapsacks successively by using an effective ...
متن کاملIbm Research Report Approximation Algorithms for the Multiple Knapsack Problem with Assign- Ment Restrictions
Motivated by a real world application, we study the multiple knapsack problem with assignment restrictions (MKAR): We are given a set of items N = f1; : : : ; ng and a set of knapsacks M = f1; : : : ;mg. Each item j 2 N has a positive real weight wj and each knapsack i 2 M has a positive real capacity ci associated with it. In addition, for each item j 2 N a set Aj M of knapsacks that can hold ...
متن کاملApproximation Algorithms and Relaxations for a Service Provision Problem on a Telecommunication Network
Modern distributed telecommunication networks have widely extended the possibilities of the telecommunication industry for ooering a wide variety of services, directly or indirectly by facilitating them for other service providers. As new services are often processing based there is a need for a shift of focus in research from traditional transportation of information to processing of informati...

Motivated by a real world application, we study the multiple knapsack problem with assignment restrictions (MKAR). We are given a set of items, each with a positive real weight, and a set of knapsacks, each with a positive real capacity. In addition, for each item a set of knapsacks that can hold that item is specified. In a feasible assignment of items to knapsacks, each item is assigned to at...
